These dental caps reinforce teeth by binding the sides of the damaged tooth together, much like a splint is used to hold a broken bone.
Even though a dental crown can improve the appearance of your teeth, doctors do not recommend you obtain one due to esthetic purposes. To set a crown in place, the dentist needs to buffer away part of the tooth to make room for the cap, this is why it should only be placed when protecting or strengthening a tooth is necessary.
At the same time, a dental crown can also be used to hold dental bridges in place.
Crowns are made from many different materials but there are basically three different types: gold, metal-ceramic crowns (both are ideal for back teeth since they are extremely durable) and ceramic crowns (used primarily for front teeth since they resemble the natural color of the tooth).

Whenever you come to the decision of submitting yourself to any type of oral surgery, you always need to keep in mind that no procedure will be able to provide a ‘perfect’ aspect. The objective of a cosmetic treatment is to achieve an enhancement in your features, not to provide an ‘ideal’. This can help your boost your self-confidence and assurance, making you feel better with the way you look while at the same time keeping realistic and down-to-earth expectations. This is one of the core values we have here at HCR: we want you to be completely satisfied with the results of your surgery and heighten your self-esteem.
People who grind their teeth, have an improper bite, who present distorted chewing patterns or whose fillings have decayed, are perfect candidates for this procedure. All these factors can help to wear down or crack your teeth. Broken teeth can also be fixed with dental crowns, be it that the cusp of a tooth has broken off by injury or other circumstances.
By offering one of the best teams of Oral Surgeons in the industry, HCR is aware of the different types of needs our diverse patients may have. Therefore, we will provide the best service possible for you, not matter what you are looking for, and we will aid you in every possible way in your pursuit to enhance your appearance.
At HCR we strongly advise patients to have an initial dental consultation with their oral surgeon or dentist before any procedure is performed. This way, both the patient and the doctor have an equal opportunity to contribute in the whole process and by doing so, the satisfaction of the client increases tenfold. During this initial discussion, you must not hesitate to talk about your expectation with your surgeon openly, since he/she will help you determine what is and what isn’t possible to achieve. One thing HCR always points out is the need for patients to be aware of all the different aspects of the surgery you are willing to undertake (the cost and recovery process); everything must be made extremely clear for you and we will always go out of our way to accomplish this.
Also, you can feel free to ask your doctor concerning any questions or doubts you may have concerning the procedure. He/she will always inform you about all the different details; for example, you should know if you should stop taking certain medications or if you will need to refrain from drinking or eating for a certain time period before your surgery.
Make sure you have good communication with your oral surgeon at all times since this will help increase your level of satisfaction. Therefore, please do not hesitate to contact HCR since we will be more than happy to help you with anything you need.
This treatment generally takes two visits to your dentist’s office and is performed under anesthesia.
Depending on the extent of the decay, your dentist may need to perform a root canal before the crown can be placed on the tooth. When this happens, he/she will need to build a foundation for the crown after the root canal has been finished (‘post and core’ foundation).
Prior to the placement of the crown, your dentist will file the tooth down to make room for the cap. Here, your dentist will make an impression of your problematic tooth (or teeth, depending on the case) and a dental laboratory will be in charge in creating the crown. While this is being done, a temporary acrylic crown will be set in place.
On your second visit, the temporary cap is taken out and replaced by the permanent crown. While doing so, your dentist will check for any bite discrepancies you may experience with the new crown and will adjust it respectively. Once you and your doctor are satisfied with the fit, it will be cemented to your tooth permanently.
Is it natural for your tooth to be sensitive, especially to cold temperatures, for a few weeks after the procedure. However, if this condition should persist, contact your dentist immediately.
As with any type of oral surgery, complications are unusual, but they sometimes do happen. However, they are usually minor and can be reduced by precisely following your doctor’s directions before and after the procedure.
Make sure to ask your HCR dentist concerning any risks you might have to face when undertaking this dental procedure. However, you must keep in mind that our certified group of doctors works full-time to prevent such scenarios from happening, since we value the health of our patients above anything else.
In order to keep the risks at a bare minimum, please make sure that you follow your dentist instructions at all times.
