Procedure Planning

At HCR we strongly advise patients to have an initial dental consultation with their oral surgeon or dentist before any procedure is performed. The Procedure

This treatment generally takes two visits to your dentist’s office and is performed under anesthesia.

Depending on the extent of the decay, your dentist may need to perform a root canal before the crown can be placed on the tooth. When this happens, he/she will need to build a foundation for the crown after the root canal has been finished (‘post and core’ foundation).

Prior to the placement of the crown, your dentist will file the tooth down to make room for the cap. Here, your dentist will make an impression of your problematic tooth (or teeth, depending on the case) and a dental laboratory will be in charge in creating the crown. While this is being done, a temporary acrylic crown will be set in place.

On your second visit, the temporary cap is taken out and replaced by the permanent crown. While doing so, your dentist will check for any bite discrepancies you may experience with the new crown and will adjust it respectively. Once you and your doctor are satisfied with the fit, it will be cemented to your tooth permanently.

Post-Op – After The Procedure

In the interval between visits, you must be extremely careful with your eating habits and dental hygiene, since the health of your gum tissue is key for the final result of the treatment. If the temporal crown is loosened or falls out, you should put it back on your tooth right away; in the case that this isn’t possible, hold it in place until you can schedule to see your dentist, who will them re-cement it for you.

Is it natural for your tooth to be sensitive, especially to cold temperatures, for a few weeks after the procedure. However, if this condition should persist, contact your dentist immediately.
