Procedure Planning

Before any type of procedure is performed, patients are expected to have a detailed discussion with their dentist. By doing so, both parties have the opportunity to contribute in the whole process and to increase the client’s level of satisfaction. The patient must discuss his/her expectations openly with their doctor, who will help determine what isn’t or what is possible to accomplish. All the different aspects of the surgery you are willing to undertake (the cost and recovery process) must be extremely clear to you.

You will need to inform your odontologist of any allergies you might be prone to or if you have any serious medical conditions. Make sure to ask your doctor concerning the diverse details that the surgery entails. For example, you should know if you should stop taking certain medications (eg: aspirin) or if you will need to refrain from drinking or eating for a certain time period before your surgery.

The Procedure

The whole treatment can take up to one month and five separate appointments; it is usually performed under anesthesia. The process takes place in the following order:

• If extractions are needed, these are performed and gums are allowed to heal.
• An impression and wax bite are made so that vertical dimension and proper jaw position are determined.
• An initial denture is placed to make sure that the proper fit, shape and color are being used. Once everything all these factors are satisfactory, the real denture is custom made.
• Placement of final denture, along with minor adjustments.

Post-Op – After The Procedure

You must keep in mind that even the best fitting dentures can feel awkward at first. Until the muscles of your tongue and cheek learn to keep them in place, your dentures may feel loose. Some patients will feel discomfort while eating for a few days to a few weeks, therefore, it is recommended that you start by eating foods which are easy to chew so that you grow accustomed little by little. You may also experience an increased salivary flow, minor speech difficulty, mild soreness and a slight change in facial appearance.

Just after the operation, your dentist will most probably instruct you to keep your dentures in place all the time, even while you sleep. After your initial adjustment period, you will be able to remove them before going to bed. This will allow your gums to rest and improves oral health.

Denture adhesives can aid when it comes to increasing the retention for well fitting dentures. However, they are not the solution for poorly fitting dentures which cause irritation over a long period of time. For these cases, it is recommended that you visit your doctor again so that a reline of your dentures may be performed.

You will need to handle your denture with care, since they are very fragile. You will need to remove and brush them everyday, preferably using a specially designed brush for dentures and denture cleanser or toothpaste. Do not use abrasive cleansers or toothpastes, since these can scratch the surface of your dentures. With partial dentures, you will need to remove them before you brush your teeth. When they are not in use, dentures should be placed in water or in a cleanser solution.

Health Issues

As with any type of cosmetic surgery, complications are unusual, but they sometimes do happen. However, they are usually minor and can be reduced by precisely following your doctor’s directions before and after the procedure.
