What is cellulite?

Cellulite is a type of fat tissue in the subcutaneous layer of the skin that contains constricting bands of connective tissue. What is celluliteThis connective tissue, which diverges in thickness and is laced with fat cells, is held in place by a system of fibers that protects our body, cushioning our muscles and organs; it is surrounded by a liquid that both nourishes it and provides it with an effective waste structure. When all is working well in the structure, waste products are removed and smooth curves result; when toxins, fats and fluids are ensnared deep in the skin (below the epidural layer) though, the connective tissue solidifies and hardens, giving a dimpling appearance. As we grow older, the layer of skin thins, ensuing in the rippled effect of cellulite. It is something similar to wrinkles that form on the face as you age.

The fat inside the cellulite is identical to the fat in other areas of the body. There is no distinction in the fat. So the presence of cellulite is not an issue of any difference in fat. It is more a problem of how the fat is positioned inside the body, below the skin in the thighs and buttocks.

Though everyone has a smooth layer of fat, individual quantities depend on genetics, weight and lifestyle. This fat deposit is an insulator for the body and acts as a pillow to the muscles, organs and nerves.

Cellulite, in contrast, is lumpy and offers no padding at all. It only happens in specific areas of the body: the abdomen, breasts thighs and buttocks. Hormones play a major role in cellulite formation because men rarely show cellulite. When men get cellulite (if they ever do), it tends to show on the neck and abdomen.

Cellulite is not necessarily a factor of body weight. Though most women carry their excess fat in thighs and buttocks, cellulite does not depend on weight. You need not be overweight to get cellulite. As we mentioned before, it is more a problem of aging. Though diet and lifestyle affect cellulite development, a large part of it is made of toxins and fat that accumulate in the body and can affect women of any size, weight and body structure.
