A forehead lift (brow lift) is usually performed under local anesthesia; however if you prefer general anesthesia so that you sleep through the whole process, it can also be utilized. There are basically two approaches to this procedure and they are explained as follows:
Classic forehead lift
Your hair will be tied back from the incision band, making sure it does not fall on the area which will be operated; if there is hair near the incision line, this might need to be trimmed. Your surgeon will proceed to perform an incision starts just above the ear and runs across the top of your forehead (coronal incision; made deep within the hairline so no visible scars are left). In the case of bald patients or those who have thinning hair, most doctors recommend a mid-scalp incision, so that the resulting scar is less visible.
Next, the skin of your forehead is carefully lifted and any excessive tissue beneath is removed; also, the muscles of your forehead can be altered, re-shaping and smoothing your brow. Your eyebrows will be elevated and any excess skin of the incision will be taken off, giving you a more youthful brow.
Endoscopic brow lift
The initial steps for this technique are the same are described above. However, in this variant, 3 to 5 short scalp incisions will be made instead of 1 big incision. A pencil-like camera device connected to a monitor known as an endoscope is inserted through one of these openings. This permits the doctor to clearly see the tissues and muscles beneath your forehead skin.
He/she will then proceed to insert another instrument through another of the incisions, removing or lifting the forehead muscles and underlying tissues, smoothing out the contours of your brow. The eyebrows are lifted are well and will be held in their new position temporary screws placed behind your hairline or by using sutures placed just beneath the skin’s surface.
Once the whole process is done, the incision is closed using stitches or clips and your hair and face will be washed to prevent any type of irritation. In most cases, your head will be wrapped in an elastic bandage.
Classic Technique – You will experience certain levels of discomfort and numbness around the affected area, especially along the outline of your incision. However, this can be controlled with medications prescribed by your doctor. You will need to keep your head elevated for at least 2 to 3 days after the operation, especially when you sleep; this way the swelling will be kept to a bare minimum. However, it can actually affect your eyes and cheeks, but keep in mind that it will disappear within a week.
Your bandages will be removed around a couple of days afterwards, even though clips or stitches will be taken off after 2 weeks. Itching may also occur when the nerves of your forehead heal and it can take up to 6 months to fade altogether.
Keep in mind that some of the hair near your incision line may fall out or may become thinner for a certain period. There is no cause for worry, however, since normal hair growth will begin again after a few weeks or months.
Endoscopic technique – You can expect some mild swelling, discomfort around your incisions and a certain level of numbness. The pain will be minimal, but if you wish, it can be controlled through medications. You will most like experience less itching sensations than patients who have gone through a classic brow lift. Your clips and stitches will be removed in around a week or two.
For both cases, you will be able to move around in a couple of days after the operation but keep it mind that you should keep it easy. You will be able to go back to work around 10 days afterwards, but vigorous activity should be avoided for several weeks. Exercises like heavy house work, jogging bending and even sexual activity should also be postponed since they increase the blood flow to your head and can affect your stitches.
As with any type of cosmetic surgery, complications are unusual, but they sometimes do happen. However, they are usually minor and can be reduced by precisely following your doctor’s directions before and after the procedure.
When undertaking a brow lift procedure, you may, in rare cases, experience injury in the controlling nerves of eyebrow movement, which results in the loss of ability to lower or raise your eyebrows. Further surgery may be required to correct this condition if it comes to happen. Broad scars are another rare condition, but keep in mind that these can be treated surgically. Loss of feeling in the treated area is another extremely rare complication, as are bleeding and infection.
Make sure to ask your surgeon concerning any risks you might have to face when undertaking this surgery. However, you must keep in mind that our certified group of doctors works full-time to prevent such scenarios from happening, since we value the health of our patients above anything else.
In order to keep the risks at a bare minimum, please make sure that you follow your surgeons instructions at all times.
