Your chin is one of the most prominent aspects of your face, enhancing or deteriorating your overall facial contours with great ease. The three milestones of the face are the chin, nose, and cheek areas. When one of these three is out of proportion, the face may appear unbalanced.
Despite the fact that it is often overlooked, a defined chin can have great influence in the way a person’s profile looks. Most people tend to focus on their noses when they look in the mirror, not noticing the fact that their chin greatly affects the general appearance of their faces. Chin surgery helps to harmonize the different aspects of your face and adds balance to your facial outline, making you feel better about the way you look and feel about yourself.
Also known as Mentoplasty, chin surgery consists in the reshaping of the chin by performing a reduction surgery of the jaw bone or enhancing its shape using implants. The former is implemented when the chin is too prominent or when there’s a contributing problem of birth defects in the structure of the jaw. The latter is used when trying to enhance a receding chin; the bone may also be moved forward to improve the person’s facial outline.
Facial Implants are made of a synthetic material (solid silicone) which imitates the texture of natural tissue usually found in the chin; these are available in all types of shapes and sizes, allowing for custom fittings of the implant, depending on the client’s facial outlines. Currently, there is no systematic evidence to prove that this material is harmful to the body, so you can rest assure that your health is safe with us.
Another option for enhancement through chin surgery would be submental liposuction. This consists in the removal of fatty tissue directly from the chin or the neckline, providing greater facial harmony.
Whichever the case the may be, this type of surgery can be used in conjunction with other cosmetic treatments, such as rhinoplasty (nose job) or cheek implants, providing amazing results in the improvement of your appearance.

The Procedure
For this type of procedure, the anesthesia of choice is usually local. However, general anesthesia can be used as well, depending on the patient and surgeon preferences for safety and comfort.
Chin Implants
When chin implants are utilized, the surgeon commences the procedure by making an incision in the natural crease line beneath the chin or inside the mouth (where lower lip and gum meet).
Once this is done, the tissue is stretched, creating a space where the implant can be inserted.
The doctor then proceeds to fit the implant into place, after selecting the proper size and shape for the implant. The whole surgery can take about 30 to 45 minutes. Once the surgeon is finished, the incisions are stitched up and the chin is wrapped in bandages to hold the implant in place until it stays firmly in its new position, as well as to minimize the discomfort and post-operation swelling.
Chin Reduction
For this type of procedure, the incisions are made inside the mouth or under the chin as well. Once the tissue is lifted, the surgeon begins to sculpt the bone to a more agreeable size. When this is done, the incisions are stitched up and the chin bandaged, like described above.
The duration and harshness of the side effects of both chin surgeries will depend if the procedure has been performed in conjunction with other cosmetic treatments. However, you will find that results will be visible almost immediately after the procedure, even though the bruising and swelling may subside in the following weeks.
Post-Op – After Surgery
The dressing which is originally placed after the operation will remain in place for the following couple of days. During this period, you will most likely experience some tenderness in the area and might feel a stretched, tight sensation which usually subsides after a few days; however, post-operative discomfort can be greatly controlled through prescribed medications. Bruising and swelling are also normal around your chin and neck, but these will also disappear over time.
Your eating habits will most likely be controlled since chewing will be limited to certain foods. You will have to bear with a liquid/soft food diet for a few days after the operation. Bear in mind that your ability to move your lips and mouth after this procedure will be temporarily affected.
After around the first six weeks, the greater part of the swelling will have subsided and you will be able to take pleasure in the results of the procedure. Keep in mind that painstaking activity will be prohibited during the first few weeks, such as exercises and thorough housework, or any other activity which may lead to your face getting bumped or jarred. However, you will be able to resume normal activity after the first ten days and will be able to return to work.
If you have had incisions made in your mouth, the stitches will usually dissolve after ten days. However, this means you will need to have extra care with your dental hygiene, so that risk of infection can be kept to a minimum. Make sure to follow your doctor’s instructions at all times.
Health Issues
As with any type of cosmetic surgery, complications are unusual, but they sometimes do happen. However, they are usually minor and can be reduced by precisely following your doctor’s directions before and after the procedure.
A chin implant may shift slightly out of place and may require a second operation to remove it or to place it back in its original position.
There is also a slight risk of infection, especially when incisions have been made inside the mouth. However, this is usually treated quickly with antibiotics.
Make sure to ask your surgeon concerning any risks you might have to face when undertaking this surgery. However, you must keep in mind that our certified group of doctors works full-time to prevent such scenarios from happening, since we value the health of our patients above anything else.
In order to keep the risks at a bare minimum, please make sure that you follow your surgeons instructions at all times.
