What Can I Expect

Whenever it comes to plastic surgery, you need to keep in mind that no procedure will ever provide a ‘perfect’ aspect to your face and this is especially true for eyelash restoration. As we mentioned before, no other type of hair in the body possesses the same characteristics as eyelash hair and the outcome of the procedure may not be ‘perfect.’

However, you must remember that the aim of cosmetic treatment is to achieve an improvement, to enhance your facial appearance. This can help you boost your self-confidence and make you feel better about yourself, while keeping realistic expectations. Surgery Planning

The Procedure

This treatment is performed under local anesthesia and it usually takes only one session at your plastic surgeon’s office which lasts from 1 to 3 hours.

If you happen to have some eyelashes present, then your doctor will measure their diameter to make sure that the grafts utilized match the lash size and texture as best as possible. The grafts are then taken from the scalp area; these are single hair follicle implants and are placed carefully and individually into the lid.

Any excess fat or skin on the grafts is removed and trimmed to ensure that each micro-graft is very fine and thin. After making sure that the cornea of the eye is protected and that the anesthesia is working properly, then your surgeon will proceed to transplant the hair into the eyelid. The follicles are placed one by one with a very fine transplanting needle. Stitches will be placed to hold the newly transplanted grafts into place as they heal once the process if done.

When the whole process is done, your surgeon will then wrap your head with bandages. Keep in mind that this procedure, when done correctly, allows for everlasting growing eyelids which grow longer than natural ones and must therefore be trimmed by the client.

Post-Op – After Surgery

It is natural for your sutures to be bumpy and red for the first few days. However, as time passes, the resulting scar from the procedure will flatten out and will become unremarkable.

You can also expect swelling and slight bruising around your eyes, but this will subside as time passes and you’ll start to look and feel better each day. The bruising takes approximately 7 to 10 days to disappear and you will be allowed to wear some makeup to conceal any discoloration around your eyes. Your stitches will be removed during the first week. You can expect your vision to be blurred for a few days, since your eyes will be temporarily sensitive to the light. This can also cause excess tearing or drying but your surgeon will prescribe special eye drops to help with this condition; these can also help with any sensations of itching or burning that you may experience.

During the first week you will have to refrain from taking part in any activity which can dry your eyes, such as reading, watching TV, using the computer or wearing contact lenses. Excessive blinking can lead to an increase in the swelling, so please try to avoid it as much as possible. It is recommended for you to wear sunglasses for the first 2 weeks so that your eyes are protected from the sun and wind. You can also expect for your eyes to tire easily during this time and constant naps may be helpful.

You should avoid any strenuous activities for the first month given that these can increase the blood flow to your eyes; these include bending, lifting, sports or crying. Please refrain from drinking alcohol during your recovery time since this can lead to fluid retention and can delay your recovery immensely.

Health Issues

As with any type of cosmetic surgery, complications are unusual, but they sometimes do happen. However, they are usually minor and can be reduced by precisely following your surgeon’s directions before and after the procedure. Some complications related to this procedure are:

• Retobulbar Hematoma (bleeding behind the eye).
• Loss of sensation in the eyelids.
• Excessive tearing (temporal).
• Infection (treated with antibiotics)
• Dry eyes.
• Excessive scaring.
• Inability to close eyelids completely (extremely rare but can be permanent).
