The Procedure

So that grafts are easily reached and taken out, before the surgery, the chosen donor area will be trimmed short. Usually, the grafts are removed using a scalpel, allowing for precise shape and size cutting; this also allows surgeons to remove tiny sections, which can be used to cover miniscule holes or slits in the scalp.

In an effort to preserve proper skin health, doctors usually inject a saline solution into the scalp while they are removing the grafts. Once this is done, the ‘holes’ created in the donor area are closed with stitches (usually 1 stitch for punch-grafts and for the rest, a small straight line of stitches); these are generally covered with surrounding hair.

To preserve healthy circulation in the scalp, grafts are generally positioned about 1/8 of an inch apart. As your hair replacement treatment progresses, this space will be filled with supplementary grafts. Surgeons will take extra-care in the removal and placement of the grafts so that the development of your restored hair will take in a natural trend; also, they will always make sure that the hair growth in the donor area isn’t affected.

The scalp is cleaned and covered with gauze once the whole procedure is finished. Some doctors actually allow their patients to recover without the use of bandages, but in most cases, clients are required to wear a pressure bandage around their heads for a few days prior to the operation.

Post-Op – After Surgery

The degree and complexity of the procedure you were submitted to greatly affects the level of discomfort you will experience during your recovery period. It is natural for you to feel some aching, throbbing or excessive tautness; your surgeon will most likely prescribe some painkillers for this, so that you can recover more comfortably. A circumstance that all hair restoration patients must be prepared for is that fact that “new hair” tends to fall out within 6 weeks after the procedure. You must keep in mind that this condition is merely temporal since lots of patients feel completely distressed when this occurs. Once the hair has fallen out, it takes around 5 to 6 weeks for it to resume normal growth and from then on, you can expect around half an inch of growth every month.

Health Issues

Infection, wide scars (aka ‘stretch-back scars) and excessive bleeding are extremely rare but can sometimes happen. There’s also the possibility that a graft might not ‘take’ to the place where it was replaced and it may ‘die’; if this happens, further surgery will be necessary.
