Male Breast Reduction (gynecomastia)

Male Breast Reduction (gynecomastia)

Both men and women have breast tissue, and just like their female counterparts, men can have an excess of this tissue, causing cases of male breast enlargement. In some young adolescents, their ‘breasts’ can grow to an equivalent of a C cup; usually, these cases have nothing to do with hormonal imbalance but instead are caused by excess tissue. This can be an extremely traumatizing experience and by submitting yourself to a gynecomastia, you can regain your self-confidence and feel better with the way you look.

This is condition which is relatively common and it affects 40 to 60% of all men. It can appear on one breast or both. For men who are extremely self-conscious about their chest, this procedure can be the perfect solution, giving them the firmer, flatter and contoured chest they have always wanted.

What Can I Expect

Whenever you come to the decision of submitting yourself to any type of cosmetic surgery, you always need to keep in mind that no procedure will be able to provide a ‘perfect’ aspect to your body. The objective of an esthetic treatment is to achieve an enhancement in your features, not to provide an ‘ideal’. This can help your boost your self-confidence and assurance, making you feel better with the way you look while at the same time keeping realistic and down-to-earth expectations. This is one of the core values we have here at HCR: we want you to be completely satisfied with the results of your surgery and heighten your self-esteem.

With the great advancements of technology, there have been amazing improvements when it comes to lipoplasty equipment, which makes this type of procedure extremely precise. In the past, a male breast reduction surgery consisted of making incisions and cutting all the unwanted tissue away. Today, the excess skin and fat are removed by using a slender tube, known as a cannula, through a small channel cut into the breast.

The best aspirants for this surgery are men who are in general good health and who have elastic yet firm skin which can reshape to the breast’s new outline. Men who suffer from weight problems are not encouraged to undertake this procedure, since they need to tackle their obesity through exercise and dieting first.

By connecting you with one of the best teams of doctors in the industry, HCR is aware of the different types of needs our diverse patients may have. Therefore, we will provide the best service possible for you, not matter what you are looking for, and we will aid you in every possible way in your pursuit to enhance your appearance.

Surgery Planning

Before any type of treatment is performed, patients are strongly advised to have a detailed discussion with their plastic surgeon. By doing so, both parties have the chance to contribute in the whole process and to increase the client’s level of satisfaction. The patient must discuss his/her expectations openly with their doctor, who will help determine what isn’t or what is possible to accomplish. All the different aspects of the surgery you are willing to undertake (the cost and recovery process) must be extremely clear to you.

You will need to inform you doctor of any allergies you might be prone to or if you have any serious medical conditions. Make sure to ask your doctor concerning the diverse details that the surgery entails. For example, you should know if you should stop taking certain medications (eg: aspirin) or if you will need to refrain from drinking or eating for a certain time period before your surgery.

When preparing for your surgery in Costa Rica, HCR will make sure to provide all the best possible services during your procedure. We will arrange for your transport and will offer the best commodities during your recovery. All this can be arranged previously with our organization.

If you have any questions, our surgeons will be more than happy to help you during your initial discussion.

The Procedure

This surgery is performed using general anesthesia and is usually a one-day procedure, even though an overnight stay at the clinic/hospital is sometimes recommended. The whole operation takes approximately 1 to 2 hours.

When using lipoplasty techniques, the breast tissue is reached through the armpit; a tiny stab wound (which leaves a barely visible scar) is made so that the cannula can be inserted. This way, the tiny tube can move in and out easily during the procedure, removing the excess tissue under high vacuum (liposuction). The cannula moves through the layers beneath the skin, breaks up the fat and suctions it out.

When the breast region is flat and firm, your doctor will remove the cannula and will apply a few stitches to close the incision.

If you are submitted to a more traditional technique, an incision will be made on the edge of your areola or under your armpit. Working through this opening, your surgeon will remove the excess fat and tissue using a scalpel from the sides and bottom of the breast. In cases where it is necessary to remove large amounts of tissue and skin, the incisions will be larger and may leave visible scars.

In some cases, a small surgical drain will be inserted under the skin to remove any excess fluids which may accumulate in the affected area. When the incisions are closed, they are bandages and covered with dressing which means that your chest will be wrapped to maintain the remaining skin in its new position.

Post-Op – After Surgery

Regardless to which technique you were submitted to, you will feel a certain level of soreness during the first few days. If it is too much for you, then you can ask your doctor to prescribe some pain killers to increase your comfort.

You can expect swelling and bruising for some time. To reduce this, your surgeon will most likely recommend that you use an elastic bandage for at least 2 weeks during your sleep. The swelling will start to diminish after the first few weeks but it can take up to 3 months for it to disappear altogether. This means that the results of the surgery won’t be evident until this time, thus, HCR always encourages clients to have patience, since results will become visible in the long run.

It is recommended for you to start walking around after just a couple of days. You can return to work when you feel good enough again, which can be as early as 3 days afterwards. Avoid any strenuous activities such as sports or sexual relations for at least 3 weeks. Your stitches will be removed around 7 to 10 days afterwards.

If you are going to expose your chest to the sun, then you will need to wear sunblock, even though it isn’t recommended to avoid exposure to sunlight for 6 months after your operation. This can affect the skin’s pigmentation and can cause your scar to darken.

Health Issues

As with any type of esthetic treatment, complications are uncommon, but they sometimes do happen. However, they are usually minor and can be reduced by precisely following your doctor’s directions before and after the procedure.

When it comes to male breast reduction, the risks include injury to skin, excessive fluid loss or bleeding, altered sensation or excessive scarring. As with all body contouring treatments, too much or too little skin can be removed and a second surgery may be required.

Make sure to ask your plastic surgeon concerning any risks you might have to face when undertaking this surgery. However, you must keep in mind that our certified group of doctors works full-time to prevent such scenarios from happening, since we value the health of our patients above anything else.
