The Procedure

The objective of vaginoplasty is to tone the vaginal muscle, resulting in greater strength and the ability to contract. During operation, the stretched muscle at the back of the vagina is fused together and shortened with dissolvable sutures, while at the same time, the unwanted skin is removed. By doing this, the vaginal muscles and the surrounding soft tissue are tightened; by reducing the excess vaginal lining, the scarring is concealed. The procedure can be performed either under general anesthetic or local anesthetic with sedation and can require an overnight stay at the clinic or hospital. The operation usually takes about an hour to perform.

The exact procedure elected to be performed can differ on the tissue that needs to be restored, combined with the patient’s goals. Vaginoplasty is a general term covering several types of reconstructive surgery. The vaginal wall muscle may need reconstruction or there may simply be the need of removing some of the inner lining of the vaginal vault.

Vaginoplasty can be combined with other female genital surgery such as labiaplasty or with other plastic procedures such as breast augmentation, liposuction or tummy tuck.

Post-Op – After Surgery

After this procedure, you should be able to walk right after surgery and go back to doing light normal activity in just a few days. You can also start taking showers around 3 days afterwards. However, we recommend to avoid sexual intercourse, douching or the use or tampons for at least 6 weeks.

During the first 24 hours, you can expect light bleeding and mild swelling. There should be minimal swelling or bruising and any swelling should go down within a day or two.

Health Issues

As with any type of cosmetic surgery, complications are unusual, but they sometimes do happen. However, they are usually minor and can be reduced by precisely following your doctor’s directions before and after the procedure.

Risks concerning this surgery, as with most invasive procedures, include bleeding and infection. However, more specific to vaginoplasty is the risk of post operative vaginal stenosis.
